Our story started much like that of many tradespeople, rooted in hope, natural ability, and a promise to deliver reliable outcomes for every client. Early on, I discovered that having technical skill is only one piece of the puzzle in the renovation field. Obsidian Drywall & Taping began as a one-person operation taking on small handyman tasks and drywall repairs. At that stage, I did not fully understand business finances, operating expenses, or how to communicate effectively with clients. Although my hands-on work was excellent, my communication skills were limited and I kept my words to a minimum.

The main issues arose because there were no clear procedures, no detailed scopes of work, and nothing in writing to outline agreements or payment terms. I was honest in my approach, but I had no safeguards in place to protect myself. I did not know how to handle legal matters, draft contracts for bigger jobs, or request a deposit up front. That gap in my knowledge led to significant financial losses. There were times when clients or other contractors would refuse to pay, and often there was little I could do in response.

These setbacks brought life to a breaking point. I worked five or six days a week, yet still struggled to get by. The financial strain grew so severe that I was evicted from my home due to missed rent payments. Soon after, I was living in my truck, left wondering how someone who was willing to work so hard could end up facing such difficulties. That period stands out as one of the toughest and most humbling moments in my life.

For many, that would have been the end of the story. For me, it became the beginning of something better. I chose not to blame anyone else for my circumstances. Instead, I accepted full responsibility and let that sense of ownership motivate me to start over. I saw that the solution was to learn everything I could about how to run a business. I studied up on business operations, legal basics, contract writing, how to clarify project details, manage changes, set up fair payment terms, and communicate clearly. It was important to find systems that protected both my business and my clients.

The process was gradual, but each small improvement made a difference. The setbacks of the past did not defeat us; instead, they laid the groundwork for what our company has become.

Today, our mission is straightforward. We offer reliable renovation, drywall, and taping services that clients can count on. Our goal is to make sure every homeowner and contractor feels informed, secure, and at ease from start to finish. Success in this line of work is about more than the final outcome. It is shaped by the experience throughout, beginning with the very first conversation and ending with a final walk-through.

What we have learned is that challenges do not mark the end. Instead, they often become the starting point for real and lasting growth.
